How to Find Georgia Marriage Records
A Georgia marriage record is a full record that is legal evidence that a marriage occurred. These records contain both Marriage Licenses and Marriage Certificates. These records may be requested as proof of a name change, for genealogical research, or during divorce proceedings.

The State Office of Vital Records provides certified copies of marriage applications, certificates and verifications. A marriage application and/or certificate is an official recording of a couple’s marriage. The Department of Public Health’s State Office of Vital Records maintains all of Georgia’s birth and death certificates. It also holds marriage records from 1952 to 1996. Although the department can confirm divorces, copies of the records are held by the Clerk of the Superior Court in the county where the divorce was granted.

Like in most other states, marriage records in Georgia are created at the county level. Some Georgia counties kept early marriage bonds before 1805; however, Georgia law did not require marriage licenses to be recorded until 1805. Officials were careless in adhering to the law and some marriages were consequently not recorded.

Generally, marriages are recorded in the county of residence of the bride. Marriage records for most Georgia counties (except where records were destroyed by fire or other courthouse disaster) are available on microfilm at the Georgia Archives. Many marriage records are available in the Marriage Records on Microfilm Collection in the Virtual Vault.

The Georgia Department of Public Health has copies of marriage records spanning a period between June 1952 and August 1996. These records are available by walk-in request at the state office in Atlanta or via mail-in request. Records that date back before 1952 and after 1996 must come from the relevant county Probate Court.
